Is there any hack for putting simple topo maps onto a microSD card for the Elite 5? Google maps, even jpeg overlays, would be a lot more useful than purple lines on a plain white background in my chart page.

I had my marine dealer install an Elite 5 Sonar/GPS on my Bayliner 185 on the promise that map cards would be forthcoming by the fall of 2010. In fact, I was told, that's the only unit for which there will be maps. Now, 2 years later there are still no maps and my dealer says they got stuck with units that are not being supported as promised.

After all I spent on installation, I'd hate to have to rip it all out to install a different company's unit (I understand Lowrance transducers are not compatible with other makes), but if I do switch, what would be available for inland NWT lakes that would at least show me a shoreline? I'm on Lac La Martre, approximately 63° 15' North 117° 45' West.

Unfortunately there is no easy way of putting other maps on the unit without contacting Lowrance for a map making license. Then you will need the software to compile the map. If you think you can do that I suggest contacting Lowrance direct.

As per other units you are best off with a Garmin which does have Topo coverage of the NWT. You will also get more support from Garmin. I would suggest the GPSMap 421S or GPSMap 521S. The 521 has a larger screen that the 421S. You will also need the Topo maps on DVD. Lac la Martre has shorline coverage in Topo Canada.
