Does the 421s unit have distance, speed and depth unit selection? Can I use it in Australia where we use the very convenient and logical metric system?

The Garmin devices are great because they will let you choose between metric, statute and nautical units. You can use the unit in Australia. We sell mapping for your area. http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-microsd-card-bluechart-g2-hxpc024r.html

You can also load topo mapping on the GPSMap 421S.
