I have a Garmin 4212 on the upper helm, and it reads depth through a transducer connected to a GSD 22. These are part of a NMEA network.

I have a Garmin 546S that I want to use as a backup display, perhaps at the lower helm.

Is there a way to hook things up to be able to use the 4212 and 546s, and have both showing the depth readings coming from the transducer fed into the GSD22?

Will simply connecting the 546s to the NMEA backbone do the trick? I think not, but I'm not sure.

The way I am most familiar with is communication using a NMEA 2000 buss. Both units you mentioned support NMEA 2000. You will need a starter kit and extra cable and a extra T connector. Here are some suggestions.
