True Wind Direction?

If the GMI 10 is not interfaced with a GPS and being fed with directional input how does it compute true wind. If it is interfaced with a GPS with a compass card, how does it then compute the true wind direction. I want to install one on our race committee boat but need to know the answers to the above.

Hello Phil,

The GMI-10 is made to attach to a NMEA network with other sensors like GPS available for showing data. It is a display that shows info on the NMEA netowrk.

You will need a Garmin wind (GWS-10) station setup to get wind information. If you need to calculate wind speed and direction while moving you will need a HS GPS, heading sensor, and water speed sensor according to the documentation to be accurate. Here is a link

The exact calculations and how they do it is not shared data.

Cheers

I would like to use the Fuel flow feature of the GMI-10, but was wondering if I could display this on either of my Garmin 400C fishfinder or my 451 GPSMAP by simply buying the fuelflow meter then setting up a proper NMEA 2000 network between the two devices. At the moment I have my GPS and Sounder hard wired to each other (soldered), without the easy network cables.

I was actually thinking of using the GMI-10 as a replacement for the Evinrude I-Command digital display if it can show trim/tilt, oil level & some form of system check display from the engine. What are your thoughts?

Hello Shay,

The GPSMap 451 is NMEA2000 compatible but the 400C is not. You will be able to use the GMI-10 with a NMEA2000 bus. The GPSMap 451 should be able to show you the NMEA 2000 information along with the GMI-10. To view the data you want you will need the appropriate NMEA 2000 sensors attached to your boat electronics and engine.

Cheers

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 421s and GWS-10 on my sailboat. I'd like to get a GMI-10 or something to to display Wind Speed & Direction as well as Boat Speed (Over Ground) & Direction.
(I can get it now on the 421s, but it is crowding the screen to the point I can't see anything on the screen anymore.)

In a perfect world I'd like it all to be graphical, with the boat direction shown on a rosette and the wind direction as an arrow on the rosette showing me relative direction to my boat's coarse. Boat speed and wind speed would be numerical readouts in top or bottom corners. Is this possible?

You could get another GPSMap 421s and set it up to display your information. You will need the NMEA 2000 connections to add it to the buss.

You can configure the screens to show you a compass rose with your heading and one with the wind direction. They look like they do not overlay but will show in two different box's on the same screen. They can be analog screens (graphical) or digital (numbers).
