My iPhone and iPad have built in location services. What is the benefit of using an external GPS on these devices?

A-GPS is not satellite based. So if you have a A-GPS device it will not work outside of cell or wifi-range. A-GPS is also not as accurate and consistent as GPS. If you have one without A-GPS then you will have no location services.

I have heard that if you tether a ipad to a iphone 4 you can get the location from its GPS but I have not successfully been able to make that work. When it does work it is rumored only to send a position once every minute.
