Montana 650 shuts off on acceleration?

I have installed the AMPS Rugged Mount on my KTM 450 EXC motorcycle. When I set the Montana 650 into the AMPS Rugged Mount with the engine off, it charges, when I start the bike and idle, it charges, but as soon as I accelerate it turns off, most of the time, and the rest of the time it freezes. Thinking that there might be something wrong with the AMPS mount I bought a car adaptor, cut the cigarette lighter adaptor off and wired it to the battery of the bike and then plugged it into the Montana. Nothing happens. It doesn't charge at all. I then put it back together and tried it in a car. Same problem. Won't charge in the car either. And now I can't get the unit to charge from the adaptor that it came with. Any ideas what's wrong? Thanks for the help!

Based on what you wrote it sounds like the power on the bike is not clean and there may be drops or spikes when you accelerate. Do you have the ability to measure the voltage on the bike when accelerating and such to verify if the bike power is good?

** The GPS unit requires special power conditioning via the USB port (5VDC). It can not be ran to 12V power directly. That may off burned out the USB port.

As per the unit not charging now. You may want to give Garmin a call. Before doing that try updating it with the free program Garmin WebUpdater. 1-800-800-1020 It sounds like the unit has been damaged by either the car or bike power. You may need to get the unit and mount replaced.

Also does it operate fine on alkaline batteries? If you are a customer of GPS City please feel free to contact us first before having Garmin repair it.

When you get the new unit be sure to have the bikes power system checked before wiring it up to be safe.

Unfortunately I can't get the device to connect via USB any longer. Will try to measure the bike power and see what I get. Other electronics on it seem to be fine however. Will get in touch with Garmin and see what I can find out from them. Haven't tried alkaline batteries. Should I? Unfortunately I didn't buy from you guys, but I will for sure next time. Thanks for the help!

Seeing if it works on alkaline batteries will determine if it is the whole power circuit in the unit or just the USB port that has a problem. It does sound like the unit needs repair or replacement.

If you have difficulties getting the unit repaired or replaced feel free to call us for assistance.

Thank you Byron. We look forward to you being a customer of ours.

Ah good point about the alkaline. I think it is just the USB port that is shot. When I put it in the AMPS Rugged Mount it charges no problem. Just when I accelerate it shuts off. Other thing to note is that when plugged into USB before if I moved it, it would freeze. Must be something wrong with that USB port.

BTW, all of the videos on your site are brilliant. Bought all of my adaptors from you guys and they helped a ton.

Cheers
