You can just hook up the power and ground wires if that is all you need. The other wires are for send NMEA 1083 (GPS data) to other devices like a HAM radio or boat Auto-helm.

I spliced the red the power and black ground to an accessory wires in a plug on my bike, I have 12v power at the three middle contacts on the mount and nothing at the others? Is this normal? My unit does not seem to be charging even tho there is power at the mount, is there a seting that needs to be done on the montana?
Thanks

When you put the unit on the mount does the screen seem to get a little brighter? On the main screen do you see a AC plug symbol where the battery should of been?

Hello Rich,

What is your question in regards to the wire coloring?

I have the exact same problem as Don. 12 volts at the pins, but the unit does not power up when inserted into the mount, and also does not charge when in the mount. When taking a piece of twin flex wire directly, from battery to gold connectors on Unit, it powers on fine, and displays AC power icon? How can this be? I triple check that there is connection at all points, and Volts right at the unit connectors?

I would suggest giving Garmin a quick call to make sure that the battery or the unit is not defective.
