It seems that the piece that goes around the handlebar is not designed to be spread wide enough to go around the handlebar. I don't want to break it but Garmin cannot expect people to disassemble the handlebars of grips, breaks, etc to get around.

Can that piece take being spread wide enough for a bicycle handlebar with some wrap on it?

There is also a large diamter bike adapter available separately.

If the above mount does not work for you then maybe a RAM mount will be a better option.
