On the red and black wires, are they both going to the positive on the battery or is the red positive and the black negative like normal? This a bit confusing in the directions.

What is the voltage going to the unit, is it 12 volts or does it need to be reduced?

Installed and pin in mount shows a 12volt supply going into the mount, but when the 650 is attached it does not charge or see the power? Is there a ground wire required as the instructions do not indicate one or is a setting in the unit needed to be set?

Yes, you must always attach a Ground wire. Normally it is a black wire. Please check the wiring sheet that comes with the cable to verify before attaching.

The only black wire in the bundle connects together with with the red power wire, as per the kit instructions (the black wire it says is a power wire in addition to the red wire?). The other 3 very thin wires are serial data in/out and a green color serial ground. Grounding the green serial wire has no effect - still no charging with the AMPS mount, though 12 volts is registering at the pin.

I'm assuming the manual is incorrectly written, so I'll try grounding the black wire, and let you know if it fixes the charging issue.

They mention hooking the red and black to the vehicles power source. That does not mean both to Power. Red to 12V and Black to Ground. I can see how it can be confusing if you have not done an install like this before. Good luck.

The Garmin mount will charge the lithium battery that comes with the Montana if you use the Garmin power cable. I can not verify if a Verizon cable will work

What do you do use the serial wires for? Can I hook a USB to it somehow?

Serial wires are for sending NMEA serial data to a device like a HAM radio or Autohelm. You can hook the wires up to a RS232 to USB converter to hook it up to a USB port.

I want to find/build a caddy for my desk where I can charge the GPS and upload/download data to my PC.

Can this be done using the data wires connected to a RS232 to USB converter? (My guess is no, and that the only way to do this is via the USB connector).
