Garmin GPS 18x 5Hz Laptop wiring?, James, kansas
I am wondering how the Garmin GPS 18x 5Hz High-Sensitivity connects to a laptop, and how electricity is fed to the antenna. I would like to find an antenna to connect to a laptop and that updates at 5hz or better. I am looking for something that will be accurate to less than a meter and be really simple to connect to a laptop and use in a vehicle.

Hello James, The Garmin OEM 18-5Hz requires some custom wiring. You will need to supply the unit 5V DC to power it up. You will also need to wire it to a serial (RS232) port. The accuracy of consumer grade GPS is 3m 95% of the time when tracking WAAS. If you need one meter accuracy you will need to investigate survey grade GPS or look into a unit that will do Pseudo Rage information so you can calculate the position manually. Right now the Garmin GPS units no longer output Pseudo Range info. Some USGlobal Sat OEM modules will output SiRf Binary that contains Psuedo Range information. Please let us know if you need additional assistance. www.usglobalsat.com Here is a manual to the Garmin OEM 18-5Hz for your reference. http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GPS18x_TechnicalSpecifications.pdf Cheers Jesse
