I currently use the Garmin 16x HVS and have to add a 12 input and a serial port for my potable application. Is there is a 16x package with 12V and serial connector available or another model that does that is a direct replacement to the 16x HVS?

Do you have the Garmin 16x HVS configured differently than it comes out of the box? If you are just using straight NMEA 0183 serial connection then the GPS 19X may be a good replacment for you.

http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-gps-19x-hvs-nmea-0183.html

Here are some of the key features
-Highly accurate position receivers that provide up to 10Hz position, velocity and time data via NMEA 0183
-Can support multiple GNSS – including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo2, QZSS2
-Power input source: GPS 19x HVS 8-33 Vdc, unregulated
-Input current: 40 mA at 12 Vdc

You will find more information on the link included above.

One thing to note is the cable comes straight out the bottom. The 16X will come from the side

I modify the GPS 16x to have a serial connection and a 12V input. I was looking at that 19X unit but I need the ability to change baud rates and data strings via PC and the compare function on the webpage says it does not have a PC interface.

It does have a PC interface. It would connect via your serial port or serial to USB converter. Just solder a DB9 connection to the wires. You can program the GPS 19X using NMEA commands. You will need a serial terminal like HyperTerminal(free) in Windows. You can adjust the Baud rate, output frequency, Binary vs NMEA, NMEA messages outputted, What GNSS to track, .... The tech specs manual on Garmins site contains all the info needed.
