I'm looking to permanetly mount a gps receiver for my uniden DSC VHF and also share it with a laptop. The specs on the 17x talk albout three devices. Do I just pair up the wires from the VHF and Laptop serial cable to the 17x cables (i.e. two on one side and one on the other)? I know they sell nmea combiners/multiplexers/etc, but I'm hoping to keep it cheap. Can I do what I described.

Hello PComeau

What format of NMEA does you Uniden Radio use NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000. For now I will assume NMEA 0183 which the selected 17x uses.

You should easily be able to hook up many devices to the 17X. You need to make sure that you only use the Transmit and ground lines or the 17x. Only hook up the receive line on the device you want to use to program the 17x with. You should not need to program it unless you have a really special application.

Most computers don't have the proper port for RS232 serial. You will most likely need a serial to USB converter inline. You can do what you descibe if you understand serial communications. If you have limited electronics knowledge I would take the boat for wiring at a local marine dealer.

Here is a link to a site that shows you how to do it. You need to follow the second diagram and only hook up the TX and GND wires.
