How to transfer topo map and city navigator?

I just bought city navigator software for the garmin montana thinking I could keep my topo 2008 maps and also install the city navigator maps and have both on the gps. I thought I could disable one and enable the other when I wanted to switch back and forth for hiking or driving, however, when I installed the city navigator maps it overwrote my topo maps instead of adding a new map to the list. Do I really have to keep reinstalling one or the other? Can't I have them both saved in the gps memory and switch back and forth for when I'm hiking or driving by enabling or disabling maps? Why do they overwrite each other? Any suggestions?

All of the Garmin map loading procedures rewrite over the previous data. To work around this, you will need to load both maps at the same time. When using Mapsource you have the choice of which maps to use, from a drop down menu. Select the first map, ie. City Nav, select your desired area. Then use the drop down box to select the Topo program, and again select your desired area. Now that both maps are selected, you can hit the Transfer tab in the main menu bar, and choose Send to Device. This will transfer both maps to the GPS.

So there is no way to load and have several maps in internal memory without overwriting the previous. What if you have several smaller maps to load?

Garmin has fixed it so that it will put multiple IMG files on your unit for different products. It groups all maps of one type into a one img file. So all Topo US maps will be in a IMG called something like Topo_usa_1.img If you load City nav maps and Topo it will create a IMG file for the Topo and another for the city maps.... You can switch between the maps in the menu
