I have been told the they are essentially identical components inside when comparing a 62s with a 78s, it that true. I am up in the air re floating unit vs hiking style ruggedness. Just curious as have not decided yet. Like the 78s for kayaking purpose and idea if flip over which I do often but also like the handheld feel of the 62 s which is also waterproof and can tether with clip etc. I know either way perfomance wise I will be happy in compairson to my 1995 Eagle Explorer that is still functional but no bells and whistles in comparison or accuracy. Thanks.

I dont know the exact components in the unit but they are essentially the same in performance. You pointed out the main difference in the units. Some other differences are in the connectors. The Garmin GPSMap 78S retains its old circular style power/data port. This was probably meant for boaters who use the 76CSX. They dont need to buy different accesories for power and interface. Both units have a USB port for power and data. I prefer the 62S because of its feel in my hands. One other nice thing about the Garmin GPSMap 62s is the battery cover. I find it more secure because of the D-Ring locking mechanisim. The 78S has a sliding latch that to me doesnt seem as secure.

I also prefer the buttons below the screen when entering data and manipulating the map. You may like it also due to your experience with the eagle explorer.

I hope the above helps in your descision.

Jordan...thanks for feedback. I agree in terms of button location and feel. Like it. Performance wise they are light years ahead of the old explorer. Tell me though, I observe both are rated for same water resistance or proofing to a few metres, IP7 believe it is. So if I were to roll the kayak for example the 62s would supposedly survive similar to the 78s all else being equal (ie no full immersion beyound few feet for max of 1 minute for example. Reason I ask the little cover for the usb on the 62s does not look all that watertight??? I realize one floats and could place 62s in waterproof container on top of that plus tether for such occasions...have you had any feedback in the regard. Thx. (Leaning towards 62s regardless) Thx.

Also forgot to ask Jordan...what it the part (cable) to power the 62s from 12 volt ie cigatette lighter or off 12 volt source. Thanks.

The USB port is water proof even if the plastic cover is loose. I have tested it. The battery cover is where water may get into either unit if not put on correctly. They both have a similar cover over the USB port so they would be the same in that aspect. Both units will be fine in a roll over.

You can find all compatible accessories by clicking on the accessory tab when on a unit page. Here is a link to that page with the cable filter on.
