I purchased a Scan Disk card for the unit Garmain GPSMAP 62. Question does the system use the card when its main memory is full (1.7M) or do you need to somehow input stuff to it when you are using basecamp? Sorry if this is a stupid question. Also any suggestions on which disk is best based on relibility, usage etc.?

Thanks

Henry

To clarify the first question I have mainly been downloading birdseye images of areas I canoe, hike etc. here in Florida. Seems to be great for seeing flats and islands in areas like Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, Sanibel Island etc. I see lots of folks asking questions about getting Topo maps but I don't think they would be much good here in Florida (highest point is maybe 200 feet ASL) :) But I may be looking at it wrong?

When you are loading maps, whether it be Birdseye Satellite Imagery or Garmin topo maps, when you transfer them to the GPS via Garmin's Map Install program (if you have a memory card inserted into the GPS) you will be prompted to which drive you would like to transfer the maps to. You can choose the appropriate drive where your SD card is located and the maps will be transferred to the card. Wherever the maps are transferred to depends on what you choose when transferring maps.

Topo maps are always useful when hiking. They won't help you on the water (look at Garmin Bluechart or Inland Lakes for marine maps) but they will give you detail when hiking. I personally recommend 24K topo maps for the highest and best detail. They will provide depth contours and also have routeable hikes and trails.
