My old Etrex Legend had a setup page where I could select the data format to transfer data to a computer application. I don't see this listed in the new Etrex manual or spec page. I'm assuming the new units use the default GARMIN proprietary format but would like to confirm this. Too bad Garmin doesn't offer the user the option of the NMEA format which I believe is more of an industry standard for GPS transmitters to interface with navigation applications.

The unit is USB only and therefore only talks Garmin. To get NMEA you need to get a slightly higher end unit like the GPSMap 78S or GPSMap 76CSX which has a NMEA port for talking to Nav equipment and HAM radios to name a couple. The Oregon 450 and 550 also have a NMEA capabilities through the usb port with a special cable.

You must have a very old serial based Etrex in order to have the ability to do NMEA. Garmin has not put that in the etrex series for quite a few years. Does you old unit still work? You can use it as a sensor for your equipment and use the etrex 20 for walking around.

Garmin Spanner software is used to create a virtual serial port for using NMEA 0183 with the Oregon 600.
