What is the ease of use for entering data such as waypoint names? How many characters long can a waypoint name be? Can you set up a default naming scheme? We have had many etrex models over the years for our river work crews. They are working on in-stream habitat restoration and enhancment and we must document all work locations for regulatory permits. Older etrex models had an 8 character limit. This was an issue. We assign our permits a name (springs, spreads, ranch etc.), and then have waypoint numbers and several structure numbers for each waypoint. For example, a waypoint could end up being named "Springs 16-11". Currently we use abbreviations and codes, but this creates more work. Also, the ability to have the permit name portion be a default part of the name would be a strong desire.

The waypoints are named the same as the older eTrex units and will accept up to 30 characters. Unfortunately the naming system has not changed as the first waypoint is automatically set to 001 but can be renamed at the point of entry to any other name. There is no way to set the waypoint naming to have a preset prefix.
The new Garmin Montana series would be easier to enter waypoint names as these use a larger touch screen qwerty keyboard for data entries.
