I am looking at the eTrex Legend HCx as a replacement for an eTrex Legend I bought about 4 or 5 years ago. The USB and color are nice features. With all of the new models I was wondering if there is a better model(s) or another manufacture that I should consider.

I use the GPS for back country travel and some Geocaching. The size, weight and battery life are major considerations. The price point of the HCx is also nice. I don't need road navigation like many of the more expensive models include.

Thanks for the help.

Hello GeoRambler,

The Garmin Legend HCX is a good improvement but there are some others. Garmin is still the leader in handheld GPS. Other considerations would be the Oregon Series with Paperless geocaching and other cool features such as Fitness.
You can use Garmins wireless fitness accessories with the Oregon such as the heart rate monitor and Cadence sensors. You can also share data wireless with other Garmin Oregon and Colorado GPS Users.
The Garmin Oregon 300 is a good deal and there is the new Oregon 450. The Oregon 450 has a three axis Compass compared to the two axis in the Oregon 300.
The Garmin Oregon 500 has a built in Camera for Geotagging photos automatically which is useful feature when placing and finding caches.
The Garmin Oregon series touch screen makes it easy for entering data because you get a touch screen keyboard. This touch capability speeds up data entry.

Cheers

Thank you for the info. In addition to the HCx I considered the Oregon and Map60. In the end the type of use (mostly backcountry hiking and skiing), size, weight, battery life (similar for the HCx and 60) features and price were the factors that helped me to choose the Legend HCx.
