I have an older etrex Legend (blue) that does not seem accurate on wooded routes. Are new models more sensitive/precise?

The Garmin eTrex Legend H will perform much better than your older Garmin Etrex Legend. It has a newer high sensitivity gps chip inside.

You may also want to look at the new eTrex 20 and eTrex 30 for they has Glonass integration so you can track the Russian GNSS.

What is the "Russian GNSS" and why does it matter?

The "Russian GNSS" is Russia's global navigation satellite system.
The newer eTrex 10, 20, and 30 uses the Russian GNSS along with the US GNSS for aquireing the global positioning.
The additional satellites translate to better accuracy and better satellite reception.
