Apologies! I misunderstood the nature of 'Title' so I'm re-submitting my question.

I download my routes as GPX files from Route Grough mapping software. I want waypoints and their bounding box to disappear from the Map Page. I go to the Map Page, press enter, select 'Map Detail' & 'Waypoints Hide and then return to the Map Page but they still appear on the screen.

Otherwise, I find the 401 just about ideal for my purposes.

Sounds like your doing it correctly. Have you updated your unit just incase there is a fix for what you are noticing. I dont have a foretrex handy to verify what you are seeing so you may also want to contact Garmin tech support via phone. 1-800-800-1020
