I have just purchased an eTrex30 from you and would like to know if you would recommend upgrading the preloaded basemap with a purchased topo map.
If so which map would be most suitable for backpacking and geocaching in Ontario.
Also, would disc be preferable to chip format?

Yes you will need Topo maps for detailed information. The base map only contains highways and city centers with some political borders and such.

Disc is better in most cases because you can load multiple units if it is the Garmin topo map. The Backroads Ontario on our site will have the most information but is locked to the unit or the uSD card. The Garmin topo DVD is more economical and can be used on multiple units but does not have as much information as Backroads Ontario SD or DVD.

Thanks for the quick reply.
After watching the promotional videos, I like the versatility of the disc, however If I purchased the Garmin Central Canada topo DVD would the eTrex 30 have enough memory to accomodate it or would I need to buy an additional memory card as well?

The DVD from Garmin is all of Canada. What areas are you looking to load? A couple provinces of Garmin Topo Canada will fit on a couple gigs of space. For example all of Ontario with a bit of Quebec and Manitoba will be about 1Gb. The etrex 30 has about 1.7Gb of internal memory.

Your example of "all of Ontario with a bit of Quebec and Manitoba" will keep me happy 99.99% of the time.
Is a selective download straightforward?
Thanks again Gord

It is straight forward. You use the program 'Map Install' that comes with the maps.
