Problem with Basecamp freezes my computer, when I try to open it?

I bought a Garmin Topo DVD, US 24K Northeast, for my Oregon. I also inserted a blank 8GB microSD card into GPS. No instructions came with this Topo DVD by the way. After install of this Topo DVD, on my Win XP pro desktop, I tried to open BaseCamp in Garmin programs folder. Computer froze up. Had to use Ctl+Alt+Delete to shutdown BaseCamp with Task Manager. Tried to open Basecamp twice, same lockup.
Next tried MapInstall icon in Garmin program folder. After connecting GPS to computer with USB cable, it worked. MapInstall let me see microSD card, transferred topo files into GPS. So what is wrong with BaseCamp, I downloaded from Garmin Topo DVD disc?

Downloaded latest version of BaseCamp from www.garmin.com/support. Works now, but had to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11, before latest BaseCamp would install.
Where is a .pdf manual to understand how to use BaseCamp?

The manual is built into the program. Just click on the 'help' menu and go through the various topics.

The problem with Basecamp was it needed an update to run on your machine. That is sometimes normal because every PC is not the same. Its like installing windows or other operating systems. Once installed you have to do all the updates so everything runs properly.
