Are there any issues in using the touch screen with DEET-based fly dope on your hands? DEET is notorious for peeling paint and dissolving plastics.

Great question! Yes, many manufacturers, including Garmin, warn against using your GPS with DEET products on your hands. The DEET chemicals have an adverse reaction to the material used in touch screens.

So what remedial action can be taken? Most GPS units are being used for work in the bush and almost everyone uses DEET in some fashion or another. Even the screen protectors are made of plastic. I suppose one would have to wash the DEET off of your hands before handling the GPS unit. Or not use DEET on your hands. Use the sprays instead of the liquids? Less chance of contaminating the hands.

Any of those options would work, the best solution would be to wash the chemicals off your hands before handling the device. But you could also use screen protectors and replace them as they wear out.

I keep a supply of zip lock baggies on hand. Not the best, but is workable. I use them with my cell phone and the touch screen will not always work first try.

The Garmin Montana is a resistive touch screen so in a baggie it should work fine.

Would a stylus pen work with this sort of screen?

Yes a stylus would work with this type of screen. It is a resistive screen that works on pressure.
