How to manage map data?

I know that whatever combination of maps are uploaded to the Montana via Map Installer, they all go into one file, gmapsupp.img, in the Garmin folder in the unit's internal memory. Will this file still function if it is renamed "myasetmap.img", for example?

If I load a second map set, say "mybsetmap.img" but place it on the SD card instead, will the unit recognize it there? If so, does it also need to be in a folder named Garmin or can it simply go directly on to the card?

I believe that the installer always names the map imagine as gmapsupp but it is easy to change the name in Finder and would make it easier to distinguish map groups.

Last question.... I uploaded the waypoints and tracks from my 60CSx via Base Camp into the Montana successfully but it appears that Basecamp renamed all the tracks to track1.gpx, track2.gpx, etc., and put them in the GPX folder. Can I force Base Camp to keep the original names?

Thanks for your comments

For assistance manipulating files in the device please phone Garmin @ 1-800-800-1020 for help and answers to your questions.

I am not aware of a way to have the GPS unit not rename the track file on you. When you search the track in your GPS memory it should display the name you gave it regardless of the GPX file name.

Actually you can have many maps on the Garmin Montana either on the SD card and/or internal memory and the unit will work with and display them all. What I do is simply load each different map set one at a time. It will be named as you say to "gmapsupp".

Next plug your Garmin back into your computer and use the Windows file explorer and locate the "gmapsupp" on the SD card on internal memory and rename it to anything you want. Next, load another map into the Garmin and it will again be named "gmapsupp" and now do the same process as above and rename it to any new file name and so on as many times as you like. Now you can turn on or off any map layer in the map set up option in the Garmin unit. I always put the files into the Garmin directory and you can select from either the SD card or internal memory when selecting the map to display.

Keep in mind that when you use the map set up option and select more than one map of the same area, one map will override the other one. You can however display a map of trails on top of a topo map for example if the trail overlay map is made with a transparent background.

Regarding the renamed track and waypoint files through Basecamp, you can also rename them back to what they were

Hartman, thanks!

Just to clarify, though... Should maps on the SD card also in in a folder named "Garmin"?

Yes you should place the extra maps in a "Garmin" directory on the SD card.
