I recently purchased a Montana 600 from GPScity. I run it on the bike with Topo Canada. IS there a way to have both this map and the Auto North America in the same unit. This way i could just select the profile i want to use and enable the maps i want to use without fliping SD cards in and out. Perhaps some way to use Mapinstall to load only the portion of each map you want to have on hand. Thanks in advance!

At this time no. In the past you could load both maps to a single card and switch between the maps using the unit. That feature has disappeared. The only other way is to start to rename files which we do not recommend.

Actually you can have many maps on the Garmin Montana either on the SD card and/or internal memory and the unit will work with and display any of them you choose in the "Map Set-up" option. What I do is simply load each different map set one at a time. It will be named to "gmapsupp" through MapSource or BaseCamp.

Next plug your Garmin back into your computer and use the Windows file explorer and locate the "gmapsupp" on the SD card or internal memory and rename it to anything you want. Next, load another map into the Garmin and it will again be named "gmapsupp" and now do the same process as above and rename it to any new file name and so on as many times as you like. Now you can turn on or off any map layer in the map set up option in the Garmin unit. I always put the files into the Garmin directory and you can select from either the SD card or internal memory when selecting the map to display.

Keep in mind that when you use the map set up option and select more than one map of the same area, one map will override the other one. You can however display a map of trails on top of a topo map for example if the trail overlay map is made with a transparent background.

Renaming the map files will work, but we do not recommend it for most users and should be done after backing up the files and by advanced users only.

Garmin is aware of this situation and will be looking into it.
Please feel free to submit your comments and ideas to:

The more comments that Garmin receives on this, the quicker they will have a remedy.

Renaming a file is a rather elementary computer function that should not require "advanced" computer skills. This is a very simple technique to install many map sets on the Montana and be able to identify them and display them separately.
