Oregon 550t basemap with DEM shading?

The Basemap that comes with the oregon 550t is contoured. Is this the same as the "Map Source World map" offered by garmin? I dont want to purchase it if it comes with the device. thx...

The maps that are pre-loaded on the Oregon 550T are topographic data of the US only, which include contour lines and waterways mapping. This detailed mapping does not cover Canada, Mexico or any other continent. Garmin's World Map software is basic highway and intertown roads throughout the globe, this data is no where close to the same level of detail as the topographic mapping.

To clarify on the previous post regarding the preloaded mapping of the US topography. There are 2 versions of the Oregon 550, one is preloaded with mapping called the Oregon 550T. The other is loaded with a generic basemap of North America, covering major roadways and political boundaries. GPS City is offering a bundle package including the GPS unit and the Canadian Topo software on DVD, the Canadian maps are NOT preloaded.

I have ordered the 550t with Canada Topo. This means I will have the detailed shading and contours for Canada, not the US. Is this correct?

You will get the topography mapping for the Canada only. You are correct. There will be some DEM data south of the border but it is not useful as a map. It just gives it a nice look until you load more detailed mapping. There will be a highway map in the USA as part of the standard basemap.

If you have purchased the oregon 550t with the USA maps preloaded and the Canadian on CD then you will have both. Our bundle is the unloaded 550t with a DVD containing topo maps of Canada. oreg550tcb

Is it possible to load the canadian topo maps onto the internal memory of the 550. I would like to get the 550 and it seems like a waste to have internal memory and be unable to use it.

Hello Don,

You can purchase the unit without the older mapping preloaded and add your own topo V4 maps. the maps can be loaded to the internal memory of the unit that is not preloaded.
