Im looking for a good all around gps that can take a beating,but must also stand up to the cold winters in mn and keep on ticking, will the montana do the job or do i need to keep looking.

Yes the Montana will do fine in the winter cold. All units have around the same rating. Once it gets below -10C you should keep the unit in your chest pocket with the screen facing you. The screens are the weak part of the unit and will suffer from cold before other parts. The only other issue with cold is buttons vs touch screen. When you have gloves on you may prefer a unit like the GPSMap 62s which uses buttons instead of a touch screen. You may find the accuracy with the touch screen reduced when you have large gloves on.

The Montana is a great multipurpose GPS that would work well in cold weather.
The Montana is a larger GPS with a bigger screen than most handhelds and well suited for ATV, quads, and snowmobiles.
The smaller handheld GPSs would be more suitable for trekking on foot as they take up less space in a pack and are substantially lighter in weight.
