How Accurate Are TOPO Canada Maps?

I’m an avid outdoor enthusiast, survivalist and hiker. This is the first time I’ve been looking into purchasing a GPS unit but got a bit concerned with accuracy and reliability of available maps. As I was searching for info on available maps through gpscity, I stumbled across the coverage tab which then redirected me to a page on garmin website on which I could navigate through Topo Canada v4.

I used this tool to check the mapping of a remote wilderness in Northern Alberta where I spent a few weeks and am pretty familiar with, but regardless of how zoomed in I got on the garmin map, it never showed any of the available trails I know of and used on many occasions. Is this what it would look like on a GPS unit? Cause if that’s the case, then purchase of an equipment worth few hundred dollars that provides such poor navigation (pretty much non existent) would be total waste of money.

Provided that the actual deal is not the junk currently available on the garmin site, which would be the most sensible choice for someone who just looks for reliable navigation through remote corners of Canada. I don’t care for games, sharing of data, built in cameras and other such – only a reliable companion for an outdoorsman looking to have a

The better maps for you may be the Backroad GPS maps for Alberta. They have more trail info than Garmin but still it may not have all the trails you are used to.
