GPS technology originated from the US air force many years ago (60's). There are many other technologies in the Oregon series such as touch screen, digital compass, barometer, ANT+ wireless and the list goes on. They are very powerful little units.

The most current Garmin Oregon is the Garmin Oregon 550 with Camera built in.

Garmin builds the Oregon. I do not know if they use a third party manufacturer and what there name would be. You may want to contact Garmin direct for that type of information.

The Oregon 550 is from 2009. There is a slightly newer handheld called the Montana. It operates like the Oregon but with a larger screen. The Montana 650 came out in 2011.
