The version of Topo maps that are preloaded on the Oregon 400T are the most current, version 4. The maps are not included on DVD, but preloaded into the internal memory. If you would like to view these maps on the computer, to preplan routes, tracks or waypoints, we would recommend purchasing the maps on DVD with the Oregon 300.

Why does the unit indicate TOPO Canada v2 under Map Information?

HI Lisa, this is a great question! The map detail from v2 to v4 has not changed one bit, the only difference between these 2 software versions is the added Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. The GPS is going to recognize the maps as being v2, since that hasn't changed, but the computer will recognize the data as being v4 because of the added shaded relief areas.

That is correct in the preloaded oregon 400t Canada it will say V2 as the map. If you buy the DVD the map will say V4. The only difference between V2 and V4 maps is the included DEM data which is already on the Oregon GPS. The topo data between V2 and V4 is the same. I would not worry that the internal map says V2 because there is no difference in information when it is on the Oregon GPS

If the 400T does not come with a DVD, can I still use BaseCamp on my computer to plan routes? I have just ordered 2 400Ts to replace my 60CSx and 76CSx units, but if I can't use Garmin's BaseCamp, that's going to be a big problem.

Hi Mike,
Unfortunately you will not be able to preplan on the computer using just the Garmin Oregon 400T. The unit is preloaded with the Topographic maps, so there isn't a DVD version included in the package. To preplan, you do require the maps as well as BaseCamp. In order to accomplish this you will still need to purchase the DVD separately. The Oregon 300 plus the Topo software may be a better option for you.

Thanks for the quick reply - I will phone as soon as the store opens and switch to the 550 with camera. Sounds like a much better bargain since I already have Topo V2. I know it's not going to show DEM info but I'll upgrade Topo as well when I can afford it.
