I have two Garmin GPS: 60SC and the Montana 650. I will like to ask you the following questions:

1. I used my GPS for outdoors in my cattle ranch, including hiking in very deep forests where I lose my satelite signals and thus the tracking, altitude, etc. Which is the best long reach outdoor antenna for my GPS ?

2. For my GPS Montana 650, which is the maximun memory that I can use? Does it support a 32 gigas Micro SD Memory?

3. I would like to make maps of my farms using my GPS. Which are the best available programs to do so? Are these maps professional looking?

4. What literature and / or videos are available to make the most of my GPS and to learn about making maps of my farms?
Hoping to hear from you soon, I thank you for your complete cooperation.

Regards,

Luis Bernardo Hoyos Millan

The best GPS for your use is the Garmin Etrex 30 which will rack GPS and GLONASS. There is no external antenna available for it. Please note that all these units are recreational and not made for mapping but if you do not care about accuracy they will be fine.

1. In order to get better reception you will need to get the antenna above the trees where it can see the sky. Adding an external antenna may not help with your reception in hard to track areas with a recreational GPS unit.
2. We recommend a max 8GB for mapping. 32Gb cards work but I have found that they slow down the unit at start up.
3. If you are mapping you should get a professional GPS and software. What we have to offer is Fugawi and Garmin Basecamp. They are not for making maps but can display the information you collect.
4. We do not have videos on how to make maps. You can visit the video page of the units you are interested in to learn where to find features and change settings.

Dear Jordan,

Thanks very much for your reply. It is very difficult to put an antenna above trees over 40 meters high.

What´s GLONASS?

Regards.

GLONASS is the Russian equivalent to the familiar GPS system we all use. It will give you more satellites to track, so you can get a position in areas that have poor visibility of the sky. The unit is a little smaller than the Montana and does not have a touch screen. Other than that most functions are the same
