Hello,
We are planning a long kayak trip and either need some good maps or a GPS with maps. If we buy a GPS which maps will we need? We do not really need water depths etc. but lock locations and island landmarks are essential. Do the Canada contour maps have this detail where it relates to the water?

Other question batteries. What is the best plan? We need to conserve power being away for 18 days. We could go with a stock of copper tops. If we go with rechargeable can we recharge using a solar cell phone recharger?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Andy.

The best maps would be Backroads maps for Ontario. It will have more information than the Garmin Topo mapping. I do not know if it has locks but I have seen harbors, boat launches, rapids and more in the backroads maps.

As per batteries you can use rechargeable nimh AA batteries. The unit will not charge the batteries but if your solar charger is external you will have no problems. I suggest taking a few sets of rechargeable batteries because charging it via solar will take a little while. Lithium AA batteries are a good option also because they should last longer than alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

If you are kayaking on the great lakes the HXCA015R card may be a better option because it will have more marine based information.
