I have a gpsmap76C and topo canada (mapsource), both purchased in 2006
questions part 1:

-can I transfer topo maps from my old mapsource CD to the 78? I've only transferred to the 76 once.
-can they go to internal memory or microSD?
-if I have topos in memory & charts on microSD, can I see both at the same time & change drawing order & opacity?
-can I access both internal memory & microSD as usb devices from a laptop?
-which Pacific Canadian tide/current stations does the 78 come with?
Seymour Narrows current?
-will my external antenna from the 76 work with the 78?
-is the 78 internal antenna better than the 76 internal via hardware or software or both?
-can I have a custom map that is just colored lines (no background) and see the topo map underneath? (ie add unmarked hiking trails to a topo map)
-I often save a track while I am sea kayaking but I don't look at the gps while travelling. Is there a screen choice such that the screen is blank until I press a certain key? (this is to save batteries)
-the 200 tracks is a great upgrade from the 20 but I'd still like to be able to have a single track draw multiple, non-contiguous line segments. Is this possible?

You can use your older maps but you have to download Garmin Basecamp and Mapinstall for free from Garmins site. Maps can be loaded to both the internal and external memory. You will need to turn one of the maps off to see the other properly. You can not adjust the opacity of vector maps in the unit.

The unit will use the same antenna as the GPSMap 76C. The GPSMap 78 and 76 have the same internal antenna. The GPS chipset in the GPSMap 78 is better

-which Pacific Canadian tide/current stations does the 78 come with? Seymour Narrows current?

A list is not provided by Garmin but when you add Bluecharts G2 HXCA015R all tide stations will be loaded. I could not find Seymour Narrows in the default tide DB in the unit.

You custom map can contain any information you want. The topo maps should overlay ontop of the custom map similar to a Garmin Birdseye satellite image.

You can change the color of the track but not have draw differently. It will only do a solid line. No dash's or dotted lines.
