No you will get the date time stamp. With the 76C you can get the datetime stamp too but only if your download the active(current) track. Once you save the track it is truncated in the older units. The new units save them as a GPX file on the unit with all collected info

You will not be able to do that automatically.

-is there a numerical indicator of battery voltage?
There is only a battery icon with bars.

On the computer only using Garmin Basecamp. Basecamp is a huge improvement on MapSource.

You can backup charts on your computer but you can not put them on a different card. they will only work on the one card. If the chart is kept in the unit or properly stored saltwater will not be a problem. A replacement card will be regular price of the chart.

-what is the mechanism to add custom POI?
You will use Garmin POI Loader to load POI's.

I personally don't think they will ever do linux. You can always run an emulator, WINE or similar. It is best you ask them that question directly for they can let you know if they have plans. I love linux but the consumer market share is small for desktop use compared to Windows and Mac. If they ever decide to do it it would not be too hard to port the Mac version over.

Thanks for all the answers Jordan.

It appears that the Garmins will leave a gap between track segments if the segments are separated by TWO invalid track points.

I'll test this when I get my gpsmap 78!

That looks like someones personal code library and they coded their software to recognize invalid track points. That you for the information. I hope it works with the GPSMap 78

Hi Jordan: The above stuff apparently was for the fitness devices. But the 78 DOES allow me to have multiple track segments in a single track. Which is very useful. (I uploaded a gpx file with multiple trkseg sections).

Did it draw straight lines between segments in the one track?
