Original question asked on Sep 11, 2012, 8:31pm
I have an older version of map source, (not sure which one at the moment) but I have been trying to load maps onto my 650 and the maps are not showing up in the map selection for me to enable them. How can I load the maps onto it. Also I have tried to transfer info (waypoints, routes...) from the montana onto my computer into mapsource, It said that the info was transfered but it is not on the maps. What could have gone wrong.
Thanks

I have been doing some reading of other questions on this subject. There has been some people saying to switch from mapsource to the new version basecamp. Can this be done with the older versions of topo canada or do I need to purchase the new version of topo canada. If so how can I do this. I hope this makes sence, I am not that farmiliar with the transfering info from the computer to the gps and vise versa.

Basecamp is a free download from Garmins site that will read the maps from your computer. You should not need to buy the latest version.

Thanks for the fast reply Jordan. I check and I have version 2 of topo Canada. How do I go about using basecamp once I download it.

When you download the software there will be links to videos at startup of the program and when you go to the help menu. They will show you how to use the software. Also check the GPS City youtube channel for additional Basecamp videos. Basecamp will also read maps loaded onto your GPS and display them on the screen while the GPS is plugged in.

The best way to learn is play with the software then ask specific questions when you get stuck. I find it to be very easy to learn.

I have it figured out, I think. Is topo canada version 4 much more detailed than version 2. I am mostly interested in the flin flon manitoba area.

There is more information in the V4 maps. I do not have a copy of V2 to compare to V4 to let you know if there is much difference in your area. We have a third party map that has more information than the Garmin mapping. Here is a link to the Manitoba card.

Ok, I have the maps (version 2)in the basecamp and they have a great bit of detail on them, contour lines, elevations, small streams, Icons for POI's ect... I am happy with the detail. This is with basecanp on the highest detail level, But when I load them onto my gps the detail isn't there. Most of the gravel roads in the southern part of saskatchewan are not there. The roads are thre when in the automobile profile but not in recreational profile. I am trying to get the gps set up for hunting a certail area and the roads, trails and detail that are on basecamp would sure be nice. Am I doing something wrong or or expecting to much. Will the maps on the gps not have as much details as the computer.
Sorry jesse for all the questions

Everything you see on the computer you should see on the unit. Have you tried zooming in. some features will not show up until you zoom in.

Your questions are welcome.

Yes I have tried all different zoom levels from way out to max zoom and the detail just isn't there. I have found that the "classic" profile at least gives me the roads, cities and towns. I the past I have been using the "recreation" profile for most of my outings but it has very limited detals. I wonder if it has to with the older version of topo canada. When I install the maps it says that the data was transfered sucsessfuly. I have basecamp on highest detail when transfering, would that make a difference. It has to be something that I am doing wrong because the detali is on basecamp.
Kind off the subject but, now that I have basecamp installed on my PC can I uninstall mapsource. And how do I keep the pictures from showing up on the map on basecamp.

I have not noticed that before so I just did some tests and you are correct. Some profiles will data from the map. I noticed roads like alleys are dropped. This was with the V4 topo map. I suggest playing with the profiles to find the one that will show you everything you need. Cheers
