Auto Archiving on Montana vs 60CX

The Montana owner's manual Page 39 states:
"Auto Archive - selects an automatic archive method to organize your tracks. Tracks are saved and cleared automatically based on the user setting". This is the only place in the manual that mentions Tack Log archiving, and there are no illustrations or additional text to explain what the "user settings" are or provide any details about the archive files.

1. Does Auto Archive save the track log to the unit's memory, or to the SD card? If there is no SD card installed, does Auto Archiving switch to internal memory?
2. Does Auto Archive on the Montana 600 work the same way as the 60CX, saving the track log as a series of daily GPX files to the SD card?
3. Is the archive file one continuous file, or is it separate files that are created each time the unit re-initializes?
4. Are there any limitations on how many archive files can be stored or how large they are?
5. Do the archive files contain ALL of the data fields and ALL of the points from the Active track log?

Compared to the 60CX owner's manual, the Montana manual is sadly lacking in technical information.

Here is what I have learned about the auto archiving feature in the Garmin handheld GPS units.

If you do not manually save the tracks the unit will automatically archive them onto the internal memory of the unit in GPX files. The unit starts auto archiving once the current tracklog has about 10,000 points. By what I have read it will truncate the log a little (at least for the Oregon Series). I am unsure of what logic they use. Once you get 20 archived track logs the unit will overwrite the oldest archived track file, so be sure to back up the data regularly using Garmin basecamp.

I have not had a chance to test this myself. When I get a chance I will test the function and post more information.

"Compared to the 60CX owner's manual, the Montana manual is sadly lacking in technical information." I don't know how it compares to other Garmin manuals, but this one has the bare minimum information and instructions. It is next to useless.

That is why we made many videos on the device and posted them on the product page. We also offer this forum if you need to ask a question. I answer most of the questions. I have more than a decade of experience GPS. We are here to help
