Hello GPSCity, I bought a eTrex 10 (e10) from you on February this year and am happy with it. However, the internal memory (not sure if its the proper way to call it) of the e10 only allows me to have about 2.5 hours of tracking, set at 1 sec logging, before I have to save the track and clear the memory. According to Garmin website, the eTrex 20 (e20) has 1.7GB built-in memory. I am wondering if this refers to the internal memory as its listed as no built-in memory in the website for e10 (though the e10 has 8MB of memory when I plug into the PC). I would like to upgrade to a e20 if the 1.7GB does actually refers to internal memory so I can keep a full day's worth of track without having to keep saving and clearing the memory.

The 1.7Gb is internal memory used for maps an other data like tracks. You will be able to save a full day of tracks. You may need to save the track a few times during the day if you are logging every second

hi jesse, thank you for your reply. So it is just for storage use. I was hoping the 1.7GB means I do not have to save the tracks and clear it several times during the day.

The tracks are saved to the internal memory but each track normally will max out at 10,000 points. But you can do 100 tracks.

When the track reaches its maximum of 10,000 points does it automatically save the current track and start a new one? Or would I have to somehow know when the track is filled up and do a manual save and start.

Not sure about eTrex 20 but for my eTrex 10, I have to manually save them to the GPS (i.e. exporting). If not, newer points will overwrite the oldest points first in a FIFO order.

Actually, even my longest track in a day (combining 2 or 3 tracks) do not even hit 10,000 points. I set my eTrex to log every 2 sec. In general, it lasts about 4-5 hrs before I have to save them to the internal memory and make space in the memory (flash memory? ROM?) for new a track. And even longer when indoors without signals (the GPS will not log anything when no signal).

So I have to remind myself to monitor the memory usage and export the track before memory runs full. A couple of times, I forgot and lost a few decent trackings which I need to geotag my photos. I wonder why Garmin does not make it possible to utilize the internal memory. Even for the eTrex 10, there is at least 8MB of space.

When the tracklog is full the unit will archive the current track and start another. Be sure to double check your track settings before using
