The eTrex20 bundle seems to come only with the TOPO information on a microSD card. The Garmin website indicates that preloaded mapping cards cannot be downloaded to one's computer for better viewing or planning and that one should get the DVD instead for that purpose. Is that correct? Could I download mapping from the microcard? Does the DVD have more complete coverage of forestry roads and trails than the microcard card?

That is not correct. Data on a memory card can be viewed on the PC while the unit is plugged into the computer. You will need a FREE copy of Basecamp from Garmins site to do that. When the device is plugged into the computer you will see the maps for preplanning.

Still the DVD is the better way to go. It will allow you to load more than one personal GPS at the same time
