The unit can not be loaded with golf specific software but you can use it golfing. You may be able to find some free maps of courses online you can load into the unit but there will be no score card or golf specific metrics and totals.

You can use the unit without or with maps to measure your shots and mark where you hit the ball each time. You can view the data in Garmin Basecamp and then export to google maps. Just mark waypoints where you hit the ball and then where it lands. You can use that data to see how far you hit it and keep track of how many shots per hole for later analysis. Use the waypoint notes to remember what club you used and anything else to help you improve your game.

You can even use the Garmin heart rate monitor in conjunction with this GPS to measure your fitness metrics better at the same time. The unit will measure how far you travel in the tracklog so you know how far you have walked and display your heart rate on those long treks between holes. Just keep the unit on you.
