Buying my grown son a GPS for hiking. He does recreational day hikes on trails and our "mountains" here in the Northeast (ME, NH, VT). He has not used a GPS before but it would provide better prep for trails and safety factor as he often hikes on his own. What model would you suggest of the 4 I have narrowed it down to? eTrex20, eTrex30, Dakota 20, or Oregon 450t

Could you list them from what you think is most basic and then which would be best for this basic hiking?
Thanks for insights you can provide of what would meet his needs the best for now and allow for any more serious hiking (e.g. Overnights, other parts of the country)

I would not consider the Dakota Series if the Oregon is a consideration. I would suggest either the eTrex 30(or 20) or Oregon 450. The eTrex 30 will have the best reception in tough to track areas but a smaller screen that the Oregon. The Oregon will be the easier of the two to use because of the touch screen interface.

As for mapping and navigation they will be almost the same. They take the same mapping just the interface will vary slightly.

For the best signal reliability the eTrex 30. For the easiest to use the Oregon 450. Both will be easy to learn. The Oregon will just be a little easier for some people.

I hope that helps some. Going with any of the units you mentioned will be fine.
