Original question asked on Jun 4, 2010, 6:28am
I am presently using the GPSMAP 60CX with Topo Canada and City Navigator on Micro SD Cards. Will I be able to use these cards on the new GPSMAP 62S unit or will I need to purchase new mapping software? Thanks.

Hello 2quigs,

Both cards will work with the new unit if they were programmed by Garmin. The new Topo maps will view in better if you have that card.

Cheers

The City Navigator card was a download from Garmin but the other one is a card that I loaded from Mapsource on my computer.

By the sounds of it you may need another copy of the software because the one you programmed and the one you downloaded should only work with the unit you unlocked it to.

Thanks for the info. Regarding the SD cards, the "locked" maps I have are the City Navigator maps. They were unlocked to my particular GPS but the Mapsource maps are Topo Canada and they are not locked so I assume that I can use them on any Garmin GPS unit that accepts micro sd cards. Am I assuming correctly?

That is right the Topos are not locked and can be used with a second personal GPS unit. I apologize I did not refer to your first post for what maps you owned.

Cheers

I believe we are allowed two activations per Garmin DVD (City Navigator), so if I have used one with the 60Csx, the second one should work on this new model. Right?

Rick,

Unfortunately you can only load one unit with City Navigator maps. A few years back you were able to do two units but no longer.

This is unfortunate and bad news for users like me. Piracy drives companies to adopt drastic measures like this but drastic measures also drive piracy...

I really like the open-source approach to mapping that I've seen in New Zealand. Open-source Mapsource-compatible maps based on freely available govt. data and user-maintained.

I just got my GPSmap 62s and could not transfer my TOPO Canada maps. Very frustrating! I paid lots of money for the disks and should be able to use them. I emailed Garmin to see what the problem is.

Hello Diane,

There is a second program called MapInstall that gets installed with the Basecamp software. You need to use mapinstall to load the maps onto your GPS.

*** If the topo maps are preloaded on the GPS unit they can not be transfer to the PC. Only DVD maps can be used on the computer ***
