That would be a function of the map not working.

There may not be routable roads in the area you are planning. Have you tried a route in a different area?

Do you have the maps on DVD or SD card. If on DVD try reloading them. By your statement above I assume they are turned on in the GPS unit. Are the maps up to date? Can you see the maps in the area you are planning the route in? Is this a offroad or on road route? Try setting the unit to offroad to get rid of that error.

Try updating your GPS unit with Garmin WebUpdater to see if that helps with the problem.

Thx for that prompt response.
There are plenty of roads where I tried it
The basemap is stored on the units memory, the topos on a micro SD card. I can see the basemap but can no longer see the topos. I have it set to hiking but tried other settings. The unit is new so I wouldnt expect to need an Updater. Nevertheless, Ill give it a try.

The roads may show on the map but may not have a routable layer to them.

I had assumed that the maps included with the unit when I bought it would have whatever was req'd to 'point me' towards a waypt. e.g 'routable layer'. Was my assumption incorrect?

If the unit is set to Offroad in the routing settings it will take you straight to a waypoint without following roads. If you have Shortest Distance (or other route setting set) and there are no routable roads it may give you the error you are seeing.
