What is Glonass exactly? Why is it something I would want on my GPS?

GLONASS is the Global Navigation Satellite System (or Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema), a Russian-built satellite constellation.

GPS receivers that are GLONASS compatible can receive signals from not only the US GPS constellation, but also the satellites in the GLONASS constellation. This gives them more options of satellites to both listen for and lock on to for a signal. As a result, your receiver can lock on more quickly to available satellites and can get better signal strength in more situations.

Additionally, users can expect to experience even better positional accuracy than using GPS satellites alone. This is especially true in higher latitudes where GPS signals can be less accurate, as the orbit of the GLONASS constellation allows the satellite signals to be stronger more polar areas.
