In an earlier thread,

(see: http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-oregon-550t-with-camera-and-us-topo-questions.html?topic=333)

GPS City indicated that I uploaded my map to my Garmin device and not my 2 GB card. GPS City further said, "The next time you load information to the internal memory of the Oregon, it will overwrite the data currently on there. Do not try to delete the files manually, just load a small portion of the topo maps to overwrite the current mapping."

I am using Win Vista, my Garmin 550T is Drive D, and my 2 GB card is Drive F.

I uploaded all of AB and BC to Drive F. I see file gmapsupp.img (27/08/2009) with size 983,584 kb. That's good. On Drive D, however, I see gmapsupp.img (25/08/2009) with size 556,160 kb. That's the day when I uploaded to Garmin.

How do I get rid of the old file? Earlier GPS City said don't delete files. How do I remove my old data that uploaded to the wrong location on 25/08/2009?

A continuation of prior post (post size limit). I verified that my Garmin 550T is able to read the latest upload. Using the map, I went to Fort McMurray and was able to see individual streets etc. I hadn't included north of Edmonton on my Drive D (original installation) to my Garmin 550T. This information is present on the 2GB chip only.

I recommend just over writing the file with a smaller map set to ensure you dont accidentally erase any important files and brick the unit. If you feel comfortable enough to try deleting the file you will need to get rid of the map that was uploaded. It should have the day you loaded it in its time stamp. It will also end with *.img. Be careful not to delete the wrong img file because you can erase your basemap.
Please let us know if you give it a try and if you are successful.

Cheers

Hi Jordan, before deleting anything, I backed up the file to my PC. So in case I made a mess by deleting the wrong file, I could put it back again. And then I deleted it. So far, everything works well.

I am confident that I deleted the correct file. It is about half the size of the file on my 2 GB card, which make sense because I chose about twice the area. Moreover, the date stamp was the date that I installed it. And, it had the same file name as the file on my 2 GB card.

Installing Canada Topo Version 4 was a bit tricky because the default location is the Garmin unit, not the additional memory card. But now that I know what to look for, it's easy.

I should add, for the benefit of others, that the key file is named, "gmapsupp.img".

I personally don't recommend deleting any files from the internal memory of the GPS unit just in case. If you decide to do so please proceed at your own risk.
