How to view topographic maps for Garmin eTrex Legend HCx?

I recently bought an HCx to replace an old Legend I got second-hand. My old GPS already had topographic maps for my part of VI installed, so I couldn't get much detail when I downloaded tracks to my computer. The new HCx is pretty well useless without some mapping software. If I get the preloaded microSD card for western Canada, can I also download those maps to my computer as well as my GPS unit, or do I need to get the more expensive, but more extensive coverage, Topographic Canada DVD?

Hello Ed,

To use the maps on your computer and unit you will have to buy the DVD version. The data on preloaded cards can only be used on the card in the unit and not downloaded.

So even though I have a microSD card reader, I wouldn't be able to load the maps to my PC.

Does that mean Ed can use the DVD version maps to upload/download data through OziExplorer or other 3rd party mapping software?

Hello Ed,

Mapping on memory card can be viewed in the unit only. Only the DVD version can be used on a PC/MAC also.

Hi Geo,

Older Garmin devices are only compatible with Garmin mapping. you can use third party software like OZI for tracks, routes, and waypoints only.

In newer units, you can use Google earth to calibrate third party maps from programs like OZI to go into the Garmin GPS. The units that currently support custom maps are the Oregon, Dakota, GPSMap 62 and GPSMap 78 series.

Cheers
