I see there was a message posted saying the Delorme Map packs for Canada were inferior compared to the Garmin Map Packs. Now that you have the Delorme Model in stock have you had a chance to look at the Canadian Maps? Did Delorme improve their map packs for Canada?

Hello,

The mapping goes both ways. Delorme has much higher contour resolution than other products on the market but lacks some other info like Points of Interest and trails. However you can easily supplement the Delorme maps with NTS topo maps in Raster format and Satellite imagery via Map packs.

Because of the Integration with the Delorme/SPOT module it would not make sense not to sell it. We still recommend the Garmin units for ease of use but there are some benefits to using a Delorme PN-60W. I will put a more detailed explanation in our Buzz section shortly.

Cheers

I'm in the market for a new GPSr and SPOT device so the new Delorme is perfect for me. But to be honest I had never heard of Delorme before today and after some research they seem like decent units.

So is it fair to say that I'm not giving up quality by getting a Delorme versus a Garmin? And if I don't care about POI's on the topo maps then the Delorme maps compare well to Garmin maps?

Oh and Jordan can you confirm if satellite imagery is available for Canada?

Hello FB,

The satellite imagery at this time has partial coverage of Canada in 1meter resolution. The coverage map will be on our site shortly.

A separate map pack subscription is required and will be available through GPSCity very shortly.

I have just placed an order for the PN 60W WITH gpscity and now have concerns that the maps and satellite imagery for Northern Newfoundland may be inferior or no existent.
You mentioned that what they have can be
supplement the Delorme maps with NTS topo maps in Raster format and Satellite imagery via Map packs.

What is the status on Newfoundland maps and imagery?

Hello Rockminder,

The coverage for NTS maps is for all of Canada. The Satellite image resolution will vary in areas just like Google maps. The satellite maps come from digital globe, the same ones Garmin uses. In the USA they are pretty much perfect in Canada there is work to be done. It looks like NF is about 50% covered in high res satellite maps.

Cheers
