I presently have an eTrex Venture HC and I'm thinking of upgrading to the Oregon 300 however I've been hearing from other Oregon users that it is not as accurate as the eTrex or the 60CSx, another that I'm thinking of purchasing. Can someone elaborate on this? I don't want to have to sacrifice accuracy for other nice features such as paperless geocaching especially when accuracy is top priority in the GPS world. Are there differences in receiving antennas between the eTrex and Oregon?

Hi Massimo,
The Etrex "H" units such as your Etrex Venture HC have the same receiver and antenna combination as the Oregon series, including the Oregon 300. The accuracy will not vary much between the Oregon and Etrex series, the differences are more to do with additional features like touch-screen, wireless transfer and paperless geocaching, available in the Oregon 300 and higher units. Neither the Oregons nor the Etrex would have comparable reception to the 60CSx, as this unit has a high grade antenna and receiver combination.

Just went caching with a new Oregon 300 and a Vista HCx. The accuracy was exactly the same as far as GPS goes. In my experience any gps when compared to another can appear to have different interpretation of the signals. I even pulled out my iPhone to compare its GPS. Despite the iPhone saying 56ft accuracy they all agreed +/- 2 feet on the distance to destination when we got close and gave the units a few seconds to stabilize.

You are right no two positions are going to be the same in a recreational GPS. The difference between the two is reception. If you go to the satellite status screen or read the outputted NMEA messages you will notice the signal strength of the Oregon is not as good as other GPS units. So in very marginal areas when the signals are just strong enough to be picked up, the Oregon may not perform as well as others.

The difference is very minor and should not effect a person choosing the Oregon GPS.
