How much is the Great Lakes SD card for this unit and is it required for detailed info when navigating on say Georgian Bay? What are the pros and cons over the 76CSX? Did I read somewhere or am I imagining things, that this unit can acquire info from paper charts some of which I currently have? Is Garmin Home Port included when buying Inland Lakes and if not, how much is Garmin Home Portand is it necessary to own? Last question: Does Garmin have Lifelong updates that can be purchased as they do for automobile mapping as changing water levels may change buoy placement etc., or is this a non-issue?

Hello Andrew,

The great lakes is part of the Canadian Card. Here is a link with the current price.

You can use custom maps with the GPSMap 78 series. It takes a lot of work scanning the charts then geo-referencing them. It is better to use the Garmin maps unless they dont cover a area. Then it would be smart to make the custom map.

Garmin does not have a lifetime update subscription for the Bluechart lake ocean and lake charts.

Cheers

My 78s is telling me that the satelite signal is weak and loses tracking, but when I go to satelite status it is receiving up to 10. AS well, my position starts to drift around when stopped and/or moving.Obviously, there is a major issue with GPS.This unit is brand new and only used several times.

Hello George,

Have you been keeping the unit up to date? If not try using Garmin Webupdater to update the unit. This normally fixes all known issues. For additional technical assistance you can also call Garmin @ 1-800-800-1020 There are no major issues known with this unit.

Cheers
Jordan
