Hi, I was not able to download to Maps into the unit at the same time, I was trying to download some Texas Sections of US Topo and also a Map of Mexico since I was going to travel from Mexico into the South of Texas, but I couldn´t download both maps into the unit, it was either one or the other, is it possible to do this with Map Source???

Hello Willy,

You can load two maps at the same time but you must load them in at the same time. If you load one map then the other the second one will erase the first. so select all the areas of mexico you want then select the texas maps. Send them to the unit simultaneously and your good to go. For more assistance please feel free to call 1-800-800-1020

Cheers

Separate maps can be downloaded. Here's how:

1) Use Garmin Mapinstall to load maps onto the GPS. It works best. It is a program within the Garmin directory.

2) After invoking Mapinstall, the first thing that comes up is: where go you want to send your mapset? I selected my microSD card. The default is the Garmin internal memory.

3) Next, you get to choose the source map you want to select from, & have to highlight the map segments to transfer. Mapinstall generates a Garmin file entitled “gmapsupp.img”. It is always the same title.

4) Mapinstall sends the gmapsupp.img file to the GPS. In order to have two or more separate, unique mapsets in the GPS memory, the gmapsupp.img file must be renamed to something else, your choice, but the .img extension must be retained. Then, repeat this sequence for each subsequent mapset sent to the GPS, including the last. Multiple mapsets will appear on the GPS map selection window, with their unique names.

This is one way to do it, but a much simpler way is to follow AZ Quadrider's steps 1 and 2 and then the following:

Simply select which map you want to transfer to your unit. For example, if you have topo USA and City Navigator North America loaded onto your computer, at the top of your window you first can select your topo USA map.

Once the map is selected and appears, select the regions needed on the GPS. Do not transfer the maps at this time.

After the regions are selected, choose the next map you want to use (in this case, City Navigator North America). You can then select the regions you need on this new map.

The program will not "forget" about the other topo USA maps selected. When you are ready you can now click Send Maps and MapInstall will transfer the selected regions from both maps to your GPS/memory card.

These steps allow you to easily and cleanly get your maps on your unit without having to modify your file names, which can potentially lead to a unit failure if the wrong file is renamed.

If your unit fails due to a file deletion or improper rename, it will need to be sent to Garmin for repair or replacement.

If there are anymore questions on this subject please let us know.

Thank you!

The last reply is correct although definitely not ideal in some cases. When you do it like that, you lose a lot of detail from you topo maps if you load a City Navigator map along with it. The CN map has a higher priority than the topo maps and thus displays overtop of the topo maps. The topo maps do provide shaded relief on the CN map but that is about it. All the little creeks/streams, lakes, etc that show up on the topo maps are hidden under the CN map and there is no way to disable just the CN maps since it is just one mapset. I would recommend that you rename your .img files and have multiple map types instead of doing it like the above way. If you want to load multiple areas of the same map then the above method works great. My experience comes from the GPSMap 62s using the Topo Canada v4 maps and CN NA 2012. I had that issue at first where the extra detail wasn't showing up so I rebuilt the maps with just the topo maps and then all the topo detail showed up in the GPS like it was supposed to.

@Cruiser - You can quickly and easily disable the City Navigator maps in settings to see all the Topo information. You can do it by hitting menu once on the map page. Select 'Setup Map'. Then scroll down to 'Map Information'. You can disable the City Navigator maps to see the Topo or any other map you may have loaded.

@Jordan - Actually you can't since when you build a mapset from multiple maps (Topo and CN maps) it creates on mapset file named gmapsupp.img. When you go into the menu you mentioned, that is all you can enable or disable... just that one file so having built a mapset from multiple maps doesn't let you disable that. I tried that first before rebuilding my maps and renaming them. I now have them renamed as multiple .img files with descriptive names and they are now seperate and I can do what you are describing. Thanks for the steps to get to that menu for the original poster. I should have posted that in case he doesn't know how to get there.

@Jordan - The method you mention does work for the GPSmap 60Csx (although it uses a different menu structure it is very similar to get to) and it is all in one gmapsupp.img file. That is one feature they seem to have taken away from the 62s. I should mention that I'm running the beta firmware so that might possibly have something to do with it but I can't see them removing a feature like that.

That is a normal function that you can do on the Garmin devices. It may not be working fully with the 62S. I will give it a try and if it is not working then I will let Garmin know. In other similar models it works fine
