Will the Nuvi 255w Charger work with the Oregon?

I have a Garmin Nuvi 255 and recently purchased a Oregon 450T.
I am trying to minimize my car chargers.
My Nuvi 255 car charger has a 90 degree connector with output voltage of 5.25 - 4.9V @ 1amp.
The Oregon car charger has the same output voltage & amperage and a 90 degree connector.
Why can't the same Garmin 12volt car charger be used for both Garmin devices?

Hello,

They are different units and the way it is set up you will need the proper charger for the proper unit. The Oregon needs a longer USB end than the Nuvi's. The nuvi cable will not work with the Oregon. Have fun!

Hi Jordan.
I have a Nuvi 255w and the cig. lighter adapter with a 90 deg. connector that came with it does run my Oregon 450. The adapter has input voltage of 10 to 30 Vdc @ 1A(max.). Output of 5Vdc @ 1A. It hasn't done any harm to the Oregon. It seems to automatically disable the double A batteries when in use. What are your thoughts on this? Awsom site, by the way. Keep up the good work.

Hello Wayne,

Some USB power cables will work with the unit. Others may not. To make sure everything works we generally will recommend the accessories made specifically for that unit. I have a couple nuvi cables that do not work properly with the Oregon.

The current varies between cables also. Just be sure not to use a cable that will provide too much power to the unit in case of a short. The fuse may not blow quick enough and damage the unit. The Oregon cable is a 1 Amp cable so you should be fine. Other cables will have a higher or lower rating.

You are correct the unit will bypass the batteries when external power is being used.
